More than 80 countries have joined the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty

At the opening of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, announced that a total of 81 countries, along with 26 international organizations, nine financial institutions, and 31 NGOs and charities, have joined this initiative led by Brazil.
The first day of the summit concluded with two sessions in which leaders discussed strategies for combating hunger and poverty, as well as reforming global governance.
Lula emphasized that the new alliance will focus on developing international recommendations and financing public projects aimed at enhancing social inclusion and ensuring food security.
During the plenary session, Maria Zajárova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, reported that Russian Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed his support for the Brazilian initiative.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted that food security will be a priority during South Africa’s G20 presidency in 2025 and called on G20 countries to establish new large-scale financing mechanisms to promote sustainable development.
South Africa’s Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, informed reporters that summit participants agreed on the need to reform the financial architecture to better address the needs of the global South.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi also participated in the discussions, noting that his country has lifted 250 million people out of poverty over the past decade. Modi highlighted several Indian initiatives, including providing free food to over 800 million people and launching the country’s largest health insurance program, which benefits 550 million citizens.
The G20 summit is being held in Rio de Janeiro on November 18 and 19 as part of Brazil’s presidency of the G20, with representatives from 42 countries in attendance.
